Numerous countries in the European Union have already set up subsidy programmes for the purchase of fully electric vehicles. If Great Britain is still included as part of the EU, many of the 28 member states offer direct bonuses designed to encourage people to buy electric vehicles. Romania offers the highest subsidy: subsidies of up to €9,400 are available to anyone who buys a fully electric vehicle. Around €9,100 is available in Croatia, followed by Germany with up to €9,000.

Plug-in hybrids are also subsidised in EU countries. With up to €6,750, Germany is in first place when it comes to subsidies for plug-in hybrids. Italy and Ireland also offer considerable financial incentives – with €6,000 and €5,000 respectively. Other or additional benefits include tax relief or the granting of special rights, for example the use of lanes reserved for public transport.
