When single sourcing meets electrification – a perfect match!

Phoenix Contact’s plan to boost appeal, lower costs and reduce emissions in the fleet has been a resounding success for the electrical engineering and automation expert. And all thanks to the clever consolidation and electrification strategy developed in collaboration with the Volkswagen Group.

There can be little doubt any more that the future is electric. At Phoenix Contact, however, this is already the case today – and not just in terms of the product portfolio. The leading manufacturer of electrical engineering and automation solutions for industry, renewable energies, infrastructure, etc. has also firmly committed itself to electrifying its fleet. Or, to be more precise, to electric mobility from the Volkswagen Group. “Not only do we intend to fully electrify our fleet in Germany in the coming years, we have also consolidated it systematically by moving away from a multi-sourcing model towards a single supplier strategy”, says Fleet Manager Christian Fiege as he outlines the fleet strategy. Two major developments for the company, which manages more than 630 vehicles in its home country.

All in for the All Electric Society

About one hour’s drive east of Bielefeld, the town of Blomberg in North Rhine-Westphalia is home to the headquarters of Phoenix Contact. Founded in 1923, the company chose this same location to launch an impressive project to mark its 100th anniversary. The All Electric Society Park is an interactive experience world that brings to life the vision of a sustainable, connected and electrified society: featuring a comprehensive array of solar panels, a walk-in wind turbine nacelle, energy storage systems and, of course, charging points for electric vehicles.

“As you can see, we know a thing or two about electrical engineering”, comments Fleet Manager Christian Fiege with a grin as they walk across the extraordinary grounds. It was pretty simple therefore to convince the staff of the merits of electrifying the fleet: “We prepared well, communicated clearly and now everyone is on board”, he explains. Pure combustion engine vehicles, adds Fiege, will only be available for very specific uses from now on or by special permission. “There’s also an extra premium when combustion engine models or plug-in hybrids are actually requested. Our focus is clearly on fully battery-electric vehicles.“

Thanks to single sourcing with the Volkswagen Group, we expect to achieve potential savings in the seven-digit range over the next three years.

From complex multi-sourcing …

Focus is also a good keyword for the second major change to Phoenix Contact’s fleet. Since the beginning of 2025, the company has relied almost exclusively on vehicles from the Volkswagen Group, which are leased through Volkswagen Leasing GmbH. “For a long time, company car users were given a relatively free choice of vehicle and manufacturer within our car policy. Over time, this led to significant administrative overhead”, reflects Christian Fiege. His colleague Jan Patrick Kübler from Strategic Purchasing adds: “Not only did we have to manage all kinds of leasing contracts, financially we were at a disadvantage too because some of the leasing rates were quite high.”

… to efficient single-sourcing

Phoenix Contact has now successfully reversed this time-consuming and costly situation: firstly because collaboration with Volkswagen Financial Services has made processes much more efficient and secondly because leasing rates are lower in general and, above all, reliable. “With open market competition, it was common enough for leasing rates to change again slightly after signing the contract, which complicated processing further”, says Jan Patrick Kübler as he describes the situation formerly. Looking ahead, the purchasing expert expects potential savings in the seven-digit range to be achieved over the next three years thanks to the new procurement strategy. “That suits us just fine”, comments Kübler tongue-in-cheek. “Phoenix Contact is a good example of the advantages that our single sourcing model offers both financially and as regards process efficiency”, highlights the responsible Key Account Manager, Natalie Feickert, from Volkswagen Financial Services AG.

ID. family makes its mark in family business

From emissions to costs – there are plenty of savings to be made in Phoenix Contact’s fleet, with one exception: the attractiveness of the fleet. “It has increased since the consolidation”, affirms Fleet Manager Christian Fiege. “The feedback from our drivers is quite unequivocal here.” The ID. models from Volkswagen are extremely popular – particularly the family favourite the ID.7 Tourer with its impressive range. “I would even go so far as to say that it is unrivalled in this vehicle class from our point of view – incidentally also in terms of leasing rates”, states Fiege.

Streamlined structures, wide selection

This positive feedback is also welcome news for the responsible Fleet Customer Area Manager Christine Scherp from Volkswagen Passenger Cars: “We are delighted to have convinced such a progressive company of our vehicles and to be able to accompany it on its journey to zero emission mobility.” The Phoenix Contact fleet also includes electric vehicles from the Group brands Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi and Škoda. Fleet Manager Fiege comments: “The multi-brand strategy naturally plays right into our hands; the Volkswagen Group can offer us a fully-fledged combustion engine equivalent in practically every vehicle class. Service-wise also, we have optimal support across our locations thanks to the expansive dealership network. That’s the ideal scenario.
