If there is also one vehicle in Volkswagen’s wide-ranging portfolio that deserves to be called a top model, it certainly has to be the Touareg. This SUV impresses customers with its sporty and commanding look, features that will appeal in particular to board-level executives and upper management. It also fascinates them with its quality and workmanship.

The Touareg also acts a rolling showcase of advanced technologies – know-how from which smaller vehicle classes can also profit. This becomes visible in the update of the Touareg that is now available: It hits the road with new “IQ.LIGHT – HD Matrix headlights” from the Elegance equipment line onwards, whose individual HD-Matrix light is equipped with – ready for this? – 19,200 micro-LEDs. The headlights use this mass of light sources to spread a carpet of light across the road and illuminate it more precisely than ever before. Another plus is the vehicle’s glare-free high beams: This dynamic high beam can remain permanently activated outside localities because – thanks to the interactive LEDs – oncoming traffic and traffic ahead are dimmed more precisely. This turns driving at night into a very pleasant experience – particularly after long conferences that drag on until late in the night.

Increased travel comfort

During the day, the continuous all-wheel-drive Touareg cruises smoothly down the highway thanks to its enhanced running gear – for things like private holiday trips with optional roof box. A new roof-load sensor is now part of the top model’s standard equipment: This sensor is connected to the running gear’s electronic system and enables the electronic stability control system to act when a roof load is detected to adapt the driving stability to the increased centre of gravity of the vehicle. But if the roof is clear, the systems allow a sportier performance. Depending on the model version, the Touareg is equipped with innovative running gear systems like active roll stabilisation (adaptive chassis control) and all-wheel steering. This further improves the driving dynamics of the premium SUV.

Plus for the interior

The standard equipment of the new Touareg now includes the high-quality Innovision Cockpit, a system that comprises the Digital Cockpit and the high-end infotainment system Discover Pro Max. With the latter, high-resolution map data with lane-accurate navigation – even in traffic jams! – make their way into the Touareg. Business travellers will be impressed by a number of features, ranging from the standard voice control system to high-performance USB-C connections (now up to 45 watts compared with up to 15 watts). These connections enable electronic business gadgets like smartphones, tablets and laptops to be charged significantly faster than before. With the Connectivity Package, the smartphone can even be connected via Wireless App-Connect and charged inductively. All while you are sailing down the highway.

Very good assistance

The Touareg comes with an array of standard comfort and assistance systems. These features are complemented by an extensive range of optional systems:

 

  • “Travel Assist” (assisted driving up to maximum speed)¹⁾
  • “Park Assist Pro” (prepared for remote parking)¹⁾
  • Trailer device electrically foldable including trailer manoeuvring assistant “Trailer Assist”¹⁾
  • “Nightvision” (Nachtsichtunterstützung)¹⁾

Broad range of powertrains

The new Touareg offers five powertrain versions. In addition to a turbocharged petrol engine (fuel consumption in l/100 km combined: 10.9-10.8; CO₂ emissions in g/km combined: 248-245), there is a choice of two turbodiesel engines and two plug-in hybrids. All highly efficient engines are paired as standard with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and the 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive system.

The Touareg R eHybrid is the top-of-the-range model of the product line with the most powerful drive system: a V6 petrol engine plus electric motor with system output of 340 kW (462 HP); the vehicle consumes 2.5-2.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, with CO₂ emissions of 56-48 grams per kilometre; in purely electric mode, the Touareg R e-Hybrid consumes 24.3-23.7 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometres.²⁾ The latest generation continues a long tradition of Touareg R models with high-tech features and customised equipment. They all were developed by Volkswagen R, the premium performance brand at Volkswagen.

The new model’s standard equipment includes:

– R logo projection via exterior mirror housings as surround lighting

The specified fuel consumption and emission data has been determined according to the measurement procedures prescribed by law. On 1 January 2022, the WLTP test cycle replaced the NEDC test cycle fully. This means that NEDC values will not be provided for new type-approved vehicles after this date. The information does not refer to an individual vehicle and is not an integral part of the offer. It is provided solely for the purpose of comparison between the different vehicle types. Additional equipment and accessories (e.g. add-on parts, different tyre formats etc.) may change the relevant vehicle parameters, such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, and, in conjunction with weather and traffic conditions and individual driving style, may affect fuel consumption, electrical power consumption, CO₂ emissions and the performance figures for the vehicle.

 

Because it involves more realistic testing conditions, the fuel consumption and CO₂ emission values calculated in accordance with the WLTP are in many cases higher than those calculated in accordance with the NEDC. As a result, there may be corresponding changes to vehicle taxation starting on 1 September 2018.
