Competitive battery cells for electric vehicles, made in Europe? With the Volkswagen subsidiary PowerCo, this is becoming a reality. In this interview, CEO Frank Blome explains the company\u2019s strategy, describes what the first generation of battery cells can do \u2013 and estimates when the first European-manufactured solid-state batteries will roll off the production line.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Mr Blome, the latest Dataforce figures show that fleet electrification is not only in full swing in this country \u2013 it is continuing to gather pace. Almost 60 per cent of companies plan to increase the share of BEVs in their fleets in the future. Of course, battery technology plays a major role in this transformation \u2013 especially in terms of cost, range and sustainability. How is the Volkswagen Group meeting this challenge?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The battery cell is the key technology of e-mobility. By establishing PowerCo in 2022, the Group set the course for mastering the heart of the electric car itself. Our mission is to build a global battery company with European roots and to help shape development as a \u201cEuropean Battery Tech Driver\u201d. We want to show that the idea of a European battery industry is still alive. The first cells will be rolling off the production line at our new gigafactory in Salzgitter this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

How will these cells be designed to fulfil the wide-ranging requirements of fleet operators?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The key to this is what we call the unified cell. It is designed in such a way that it can be used throughout the Group across almost all brands and regions and can be adapted flexibly to suit virtually any conceivable requirement. This relates not only to the type of vehicles in which it can be installed \u2013 from small cars to SUVs \u2013 but also to specific customer needs. Regardless of whether you are looking for the greatest possible range, very fast charging or maximum cost efficiency: We are extremely flexible when it comes to cell chemistry. The Volkswagen Group and PowerCo have thus created a global technology platform that optimally balances standardisation, scaling, and flexibility. Ultimately, with the battery cell we are pursuing a similar principle of success to that of the MQB and MEB vehicle platforms that have proven themselves millions of times over.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You also pursue a similarly standardised approach with regard to your cell factories …<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s right! This is a key component. Our standard factory concept combines state-of-the-art production technologies with a high level of automation \u2013 all PowerCo factories are constructed in the same way and are fully interconnected. This strategy puts us in a position to produce on a par with the European sites of our Asian competitors in terms of costs and quality. In this context, the production ramp-up in Salzgitter is also a milestone. The lessons learnt from this project will help us get our other locations in Valencia and overseas in St. Thomas, Canada, up and running quickly. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Let\u2019s circle back to the product: What specific improvements can users expect from the first PowerCo cells compared to previous batteries?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We recently presented the first generation of cells based on nickel, manganese and cobalt (NMC) at the IAA. With an energy density of 660 Wh\/l, this is around 10 per cent higher than the cells previously installed at Volkswagen and is one of the most powerful battery cells on the market in the volume segment. At the same time, we are already working on expanding our portfolio: we are experimenting with different cell types based on lithium iron phosphate and sodium ions, for example. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Of course, the question of sustainability always arises in connection with the raw materials used in batteries, especially as the EU battery passport will require complete supply chain documentation from 2027. How does PowerCo address this issue?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We are already ahead of the upcoming regulations. We currently trace the raw materials cobalt, lithium and nickel back to the original mines \u2013 including the intermediate smelting and refining plants. This is possible because we demand traceability of the supply chain from our suppliers. As far as work in the mines is concerned, the strictest global mining standard IRMA is our benchmark. The companies are contractually obliged to comply with this or equivalent certifications, to submit annual sustainability reports to us and to grant us audit rights. In short: Not only do we know where our materials come from \u2013 we also do everything in our power to ensure that they are extracted and processed responsibly.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Solid-state batteries promise enormous progress in terms of sustainability, but especially in terms of range, charging times, and safety. What is the current situation in this regard?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The solid-state battery <\/a>has the potential to be a game changer in electromobility. We plan to integrate this key technology into our unified cell in the future, making it scalable and available across all brands. Our industrialisation team works hand in hand with the solid-state experts from QuantumScape in California. Incidentally, visitors to this year\u2019s IAA were able to get a first impression of the performance capabilities of these battery storage systems. At the show, together with Audi and Ducati, we presented a motorcycle prototype that draws its energy from up to 980 QSE-5 solid-state cells from QuantumScape. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

PowerCo<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Founded in 2022 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, PowerCo stands for European sovereignty in battery cell production. The company is currently building three gigafactories with a total volume of up to 200 GWh at its headquarters in Salzgitter, Germany, in Valencia, Spain, and in St. Thomas, Canada. The current focus project is the development of a unified cell for more than 80 per cent of the electric vehicles of all Volkswagen Group brands.<\/span><\/p>\n
