How far along is MOIA on its journey towards fully driverless mobility? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In June, we presented Volkswagen\u2019s first driverless production vehicle, the ID. Buzz AD, at the UITP Summit. It has been specially developed for use in autonomous on-demand services and is a central component of our turnkey solution. Meanwhile, we are making advancements in real operation. Our internal pilot operation with employees is currently underway in Hamburg. Here, we are testing the driverless vehicle and all the associated processes, from booking to fleet management, under real conditions. This phase is crucial for ensuring security and reliability, and for continuously improving our system. In the coming weeks, we will gradually roll out trial operations to external user groups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The goal of our business model is to enable cities, operators and mobility providers to safely integrate autonomous services into their systems. How can MOIA help to address challenges such as the shortage of drivers, congestion and undersupply in rural areas?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Driverless mobility is not an end in itself. It can make an important contribution to better addressing key challenges in the mobility sector. Driverless fleets can be deployed where buses and trains reach their limits in terms of economic viability and personnel, thereby alleviating the existing driver shortage in the long term. In cities, autonomous services will help to ease traffic congestion by making shared mobility more efficient and reliable. At the same time, they can significantly improve connectivity in rural areas, making mobility accessible to more people. What\u2019s crucial is that autonomous services are part of a sustainable mobility mix that intelligently combines different modes of transport. How do you ensure that driverless vehicles from MOIA also work reliably under difficult conditions such as rain, snow or bright sunshine? How is safety guaranteed?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Driverless mobility has to work where people live and move. In other words no only in sunshine, but also in rain or snow. That is why we are pursuing a broad testing approach and gathering experience in very different cities and weather conditions. In Oslo (to the Video MOIA Autonomous Driving Winter Testing)<\/a>\u00a0, for example, we are carrying out tests under winter conditions such as snowfall, icy roads, covered road markings and reduced visibility. In Austin, on the other hand, high temperatures and strong sunlight are the main factors, while Hamburg and Munich are representative of dense European city traffic. These varies test environments provide us with valuable data with which we can continuously improve our systems and prepare them for real-world conditions. We rely on sensor redundancy for this purpose. The cameras, radars and lidars complement each other. In addition, we rely on comprehensive security mechanisms and close monitoring. This is how we ensure that the ID. Buzz AD functions reliably even in difficult weather and traffic conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What is your vision for MOIA in the years to come? What will change most from the perspective of passengers and cities?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Our vision is to firmly establish driverless mobility as a part of the mobility mix. For passengers, this means comfortable, affordable and reliable mobility on demand. For cities, this means less traffic congestion, lower emissions and better connectivity between urban and rural areas. We want to show that driverless mobility is developing in Europe and can be implemented successfully.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Yes, I am certain it will. With its progressive legislation on driverless driving, strong industry and well-developed public transport system, Germany has the best conditions for taking on a leading role. At the same time, there is a clear desire to make public transport even more flexible and efficient, and this is precisely where autonomous mobility can make a decisive contribution. It is crucial that autonomous mobility is conceived in a visionary way, and that projects of this magnitude bring real added value to people, cities and society.<\/p>\n
