The tech player is not only helping its diverse clients to drive their digital transformation, it is also shaping the transition to electric mobility across its fleet. To date, more than half of the 480 fleet vehicles in Germany are PHEVs or BEVs \u2013 including recently 10 all-electric ID.7 Tourer estate cars. Mr Conrad, your company already included electrified vehicles in its fleet when this was not yet common practice for many. How did that come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a sense, it is in our DNA to anticipate developments. And although combustion-engine vehicles \u2013 first and foremost diesel vehicles \u2013 have served us well in the fleet for a long time, it was clear to us at an early stage that the future for fleets can only be electric. At the end of the day, conserving resources and avoiding emissions represent one of the greatest challenges of our time. As part of our internal Ready4Zero initiative, we are fully embracing the challenge of reducing CO\u2082\u00a0emissions in the area of mobility too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What role does mobility play in general for your business? <\/strong><\/p>\n

It is an integral part of our day-to-day business. As a tech company, we naturally choose digital options wherever possible to reach our customers and employees. However, making personal contact at a local level remains essential in many cases. And to do this, plug-in hybrids, in particular, have become central to our electrification strategy. This bridging technology has allowed us to quickly gain valuable experience with electric mobility. However, we also asked ourselves whether it made sense in the long run to use a PHEV with an electric range of 100 kilometres \u2013 and yet have a combustion engine on board; especially since pure battery-electric alternatives are now available that are ideal for fleet use …<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This leads us directly to the all-electric ID.7 Tourer. What were the key factors in this procurement decision?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We naturally prepared specifications in which we detailed the points that are absolutely essential for Sopra Steria. These were criteria like external impact and luggage compartment capacity \u2013 but above all, of course, the technological parameters: we wanted a range that was suitable for long distances, a battery energy content of at least 77 kWh and good charging performance. The aim here was a DC charging capacity of 170 kW and charging from 10 to 80 per cent in the shortest possible time. In addition, we wanted to be sure that the raw materials used would be carefully managed when vehicles reach their end of life. And last but not least, the underlying financial conditions naturally also had to be right; we benefited in turn here from our longstanding collaboration with Volkswagen Financial Services AG.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Did it take much convincing for your company car users to come on board with the idea of battery electric vehicles like the ID.7 Tourer? <\/strong><\/p>\n

We did not sense any negative feedback from our users when we presented the idea to them. Quite the opposite! They were impressed that we were considering making the switch. We also received great support from management for our project \u2013 including in the form of numerous orders for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sounds like the idea practically sold itself …<\/strong><\/p>\n

It certainly didn\u2019t come out of nowhere. We had been organising regular Mobility Days for quite some time, where those interested could find out more about the topic of electric mobility. And it wasn\u2019t all theory at these events. Employees were able to extensively test the e-vehicles for themselves each time. As a result, many now only consider electric vehicles. And not because they have to, but because they believe in it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You are also a committed BEV driver<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s right! I drive some 30,000 kilometres a year under purely electric power. But you still learn something new every day. For example, at an event recently in Frankfurt, I discovered how clever charging planning can help to avoid unnecessarily costly situations. It was also about what to do if the charging process doesn\u2019t work right away. We are planning to make a short video clip of these and other findings and make it available to all employees. Because regardless of whether company car, rental car or car-sharing vehicle: at some point, we all come into contact with electric mobility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Which vehicle type is the most common in Sopra Steria\u2019s fleet?<\/strong>

As with many other companies, our fleet also has a high percentage of estate cars. There is strong demand at present for mid-range and upper mid-range vehicles. It\u2019s particularly pleasing that a large number of BEVs are being launched at present in these categories in particular.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Which vehicle manufacturer characterises your fleet most?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We continuously monitor the market \u2013 and have really never before seen so many manufacturers on the German vehicle market. Many new ones are entering the market, while some have already disappeared again. Sopra Steria remains very focused, however, despite this highly dynamic situation: we only consider suppliers that can hold their own amid conflicting priorities like discounts, residual value and low operating costs and offer interesting leasing rates. It\u2019s no coincidence therefore that Volkswagen Group vehicles have been part of our portfolio for many years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
