The Volkswagen Group\u2019s software development company CARIAD has been driving this development at full speed for several years. High time therefore for a first-hand account of the latest happenings! We spoke to Knut Kr\u00f6sche, Head of Digital Business & Mobility Services at CARIAD.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mr Kr\u00f6sche, we last spoke in 2021, so about two years ago \u2013 and as we all know, that\u2019s half an eternity in the IT industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You can say that again! (laughs) We\u2019ve had quite a lot going on in that time. If I may quote our CEO Oliver Blume: \u201cThe automotive industry is transforming at an unprecedented pace, with e-mobility and digitalisation in particular dominating the agenda of the future.\u201d Where should I begin?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Let\u2019s start where we left off last time: At that time we talked about Plug & Charge among other things.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We already delivered on this last year and since then the system has established itself in increasingly more electric vehicles of the Group brands, allowing users to validate themselves and to pay at the charging station without any card or such like. When we are on the subject: We’ve also made great progress in improving the management of charging stations. Drivers can check the infotainment system display to see which charging station is currently available, what its capacity utilisation is like, how others have rated it and where the best price can be found for charging. In addition, the vehicle shows me caf\u00e9s, shopping facilities and other points of interest in the vicinity. This is all possible because CARIAD sources, merges and keeps such POI data up to date at all times across all Group brands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The vehicles themselves are also known to be important sources of data for you \u2026
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Absolutely! For example, we can view the temperature data at an electric vehicle\u2019s location and derive potential charging information from it. In practice then, a company car driver might return home on a cold winter\u2019s evening and decide not to connect his vehicle to the wall box in the belief that the battery is sufficiently charged. However, as we all know, cold causes problems for the energy storage units in electric cars. The system therefore recommends in this situation that he charge the battery as a precaution so that there is sufficient capacity to get him started the next day. This is already possible today in the ID. family and in some \u0160koda and Audi vehicles without any problems – and with the new premium software platform 1.2 for Audi and Porsche, countless other practical features are set to follow from next year. Maybe some of you followed the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona \u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

CARIAD launched the first Group Application Store there based on this new platform. So how does that work exactly?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Group Application Store allows apps to be integrated directly into the vehicle\u2019s user interface, so for example popular third-party applications like Spotify, Yelp or the video conference tool WebEx. It all works seamlessly \u2013 in other words users no longer need to mirror their smartphones to the infotainment system in order to listen to their favourite playlist. As soon as a user installs an app from the store, it appears in the app grid in the infotainment system. They can then start the app by tapping it. Customers will be able to experience the Group App Store for the first time this summer as a brand-specific variant for Audi (from model year 2024), and it will be launched at Porsche and Volkswagen somewhat later. But as is typical of the Group, the solution will then be rolled out successively to suitable vehicles across all Group brands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What other benefits can customers expect from the new platform 1.2?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The platform basically opens up a whole world of possibilities: Apart from the in-car application store mentioned, significant improvements are being made to the voice assistants as well as the navigation, which should please the heavy users in the company car segment in particular. The optimum travel route from Berlin to Paris is shown in full in a few seconds, including charge planning and everything in between. Customers also benefit from enormous progress in terms of service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Another topical issue currently being addressed by CARIAD is the development of personal user IDs, which the vehicle can use to determine who is currently driving the vehicle. Where do you see the specific benefit in this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Essentially such user IDs are the logical consequence of continual enhancement of the software platforms for our vehicles. Platforms such as 1.2 make it possible to increasingly use data on individual driving behaviour of our clients \u2013 naturally in absolute harmony with data protection and only with the consent of the user. Together with a personal ID we can make the car a chameleon so to speak that adapts optimally to the person behind the wheel and even other passengers. This ranges from trivial things like temperature control and seat adjustment to display design and the arrangement of apps in the infotainment system through to personal route planning preferences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This sounds interesting, particularly in view of pool fleets \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Exactly. This target group would benefit enormously from this because every team member would then be stepping into their \u201cown\u201d car \u2013 even if others used it beforehand. In addition, we can also give fleet managers the possibility to load car policy-related specifications into the vehicle, for instance. I am thinking of novice drivers in this regard. If the company wants to limit their speed on the motorway to below 120 km\/h to prevent damage, this can be regulated effortlessly on the basis of the ONE.Business ID.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

We will be able to experience the first functions in premium vehicles in real operation from next year. Naturally such IT topics are highly complex from a legal perspective too, especially since the legislation is not identical in every country.
