The most recent additions are the Volkswagen Group\u2019s future gigafactories in Valencia, Spain, and St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada (picture above).<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;29426&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"iv-modul__question\">\n<p>The deal has been done. The Volkswagen Group and its battery subsidiary PowerCo SE\u00b9\u207e are setting up the country\u2019s first gigafactory in Parc Sagunt II in the Spanish city of Valencia. The construction of the battery production complex is a central pillar of the \u201cFuture: Fast Forward\u201d programme, and is intended to provide an important boost for Spain in its transformation into a European hub for electric mobility. The approximately 200-hectare new site in the port city will initially have an annual production capacity of 40 gigawatt hours (GWh), but has the potential to be expanded to 60 GWh in the future. The cell factory is to be supplied completely with green electricity generated by solar and wind power, for instance by a new 250-hectare solar farm in the immediate vicinity. Gigafactory Valencia will start production of the unified cell in 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Towards an industrial standard<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"iv-modul__question\">\n<p>The Volkswagen Group\u2019s current battery offensive was launched some months back \u2013 in the summer of last year, to be exact. In July 2022, the Group broke ground on its first in-house cell factory in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony, Germany. The first batteries are expected to roll off the production line in just two years\u2019 time. In terms of technology, the batteries will be prismatic unified cells, which allow the flexible use of a raft of different cell chemistries. Specifically, this means that these energy storage units could be used in up to 80 percent of all Group models. They are expected to become benchmarks with respect to range, charging times and safety. A further benefit is that the use of such a unified cell delivers clear cost advantages. All in all, they meet essential prerequisites for a possible future industrial standard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;29437&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #39879e;\">\u201cFor each investment in environmentally sustainable battery production, we will not only consider site characteristics and infrastructure but also, and especially, the availability of adequate quantities of energy from renewable sources and competitive financial conditions.\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_column_text]<span style=\"color: #39879e;\"><strong>Thomas Schmall<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #39879e;\">Board Member for Technology of Volkswagen AG and<br \/>\nChairman of the Supervisory Board of PowerCo SE<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Broad expertise, effectively combined<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"iv-modul__question\">\n<div class=\"iv-modul__question\">\n<p>PowerCo SE is responsible for the Volkswagen Group\u2019s global battery business. From Salzgitter, the company manages international factory operations, the further development of cell technology, the vertical integration of the value chain and the supply of machinery and equipment to the factories. Looking ahead, further products such as major storage systems for the energy grid are planned. \u201cPowerCo will become a global battery player. The company\u2019s major strength will be vertical integration from raw materials and the cell right through to recycling. In future, we will handle all the relevant activities in-house and will gain a strategic competitive advantage in the race to take the lead in e-mobility,\u201d says Thomas Schmall, Board Member for Technology of Volkswagen AG and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PowerCo SE.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Global outlook<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"iv-modul__question\">\n<p>The decision by PowerCo to establish its next factory in the Canadian city of St. Thomas, Ontario, represents another important milestone in the worldwide roll-out of Volkswagen\u2019s battery strategy. Following Salzgitter and Valencia, this is the Group\u2019s third gigafactory worldwide and the first PowerCo cell factory in North America. It will equip the Group brands\u2019 BEVs in the region with cutting-edge battery cells. \u201cPowerCo is all set to introduce key strategic assets such as the unified cell and the standardised cell factory to Canada and North America. We are dedicated to building up regional and therefore robust, transparent and sustainable supply chains,\u201d says Frank Blome, CEO PowerCo SE. The cell factory in St. Thomas will have an annual production capacity of up to 90 GWh in the final expansion phase \u2013 enough for around 1 million electric vehicles.
